Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative has been working diligently on a project to bring high-speed fiber broadband to the Southern Oregon Coast. As the project moves forward, Beacon Broadband, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CCEC hopes to start delivering advanced broadband products over cutting edge fiber-to-the-home technology soon.
Currently, about 20% of CCEC members have little to no high-speed internet access except through less than adequate satellite or cellular data services. Accessing twenty-first-century digital services such as telemedicine, remote telecommuting, and distance learning can be challenging, given the current bandwidth constraints in much of CCEC’s service territory. CCEC’s Beacon Broadband project is intended to solve this problem by bringing the high-speed fiber experience where no one else will go.
When CCEC spearheaded this project in 2018, it was quickly understood broadband would contribute immeasurably to economic vitality to the region. Not only would this project allow for CCEC to diversify revenues, but for the first time, members in all service areas would have equitable access to high-quality internet service.
The eagerness to bring broadband forward became amplified after members voted to approve CCEC’s authority to provide broadband internet service by 92% earlier this year. However as exciting as the results are, it is imperative that CCEC strategically manage the risks associated with a project this size. CCEC wants to ensure that we build a service that is right for our communities and the cooperative.
As the project moves forward, CCEC has applied for grant funding to build a broadband network well suited to the region.
